Clapping Words
Target Age:
Early Four-Year Old
What To Do:
This fun activity will set the stage for your child's understanding of syllables. Say your child's name as you clap the number of syllables. (Example, Johnny will have two claps). If your child seems to grasp the concept, try the same activity with the names of family members and friends. Next, try clapping the names of the rooms in your house, the names of different foods, etc. After each word, see if your child can tell you the number of syllables, (or claps).
