East and West

Target Age:

Middle Four-Year Old

What To Do:

Give your child a beginning lesson in directions by introducing the concept of east and west. Point out the direction where the sun comes up as an indication of east, and the direction where the sun sets as an indication of west. Play a game with this concept by then asking your child to take two steps east, then 3 hops west, etc. Ask your child to find a window that faces west and a door that faces east, etc. With a little practice, your child may become one of those people with a great sense of direction!

Variations:

When you are outside, write the word "East" with an arrow pointing east. Do the same with "West."

You can make index cards with "East" and "West". Place these in the east and west sides of your home.
